Tips for a good Night’s Sleep

Are you struggling with insomnia? Getting a full night’s rest is essential to good health—there is no substitute for it. Studies have shown that more and more Americans are trying to do without a full night’s sleep due to stress and busyness. Some people may think that their bodies can function well without the recommended amount of sleep (eight to nine hours)—however, getting only four to seven hours of sleep or even less comes with a dangerous price. Here are some great tips on how to get a full and healthy night’s sleep.

Stick to a sleep schedule. Go to bed at the same time every night. Choose a time when you normally feel tired so that you don’t toss and turn. Try not to break this routine on weekends, even though it may be tempting to stay up late. If you want to change your bedtime, help your body adjust by making the change in small daily increments, such as 15 minutes earlier or later each day. Additionally, wake up at the same time each morning—your body will likely get used to it and wake you up at the same time eventually.

Don’t eat or drink alcohol right before bed. Leave a wide gap between dinner and bedtime, and even though alcohol may seem like it helps you sleep, it will prevent you from getting quality, healthy sleep and may take a toll on your energy level and overall health.

Don’t consume caffeine after noon. Chocolate, tea, coffee, colas, and other caffeine-laden drinks should not be consumed in the afternoon. Check the ingredients of anything you ingest to ensure caffeine, ephedra, and other stimulants are absent. If you must drink soda, go with a caffeine-free variety.
